Q. What is a Virtual Assistant (VA)?
Someone who works from his/her own office doing the tasks of an in-house member of staff without being on site. They work via the Internet, e-mail, phone, fax, and mail/courier systems to do your tasks for you. They never set foot in your office unless a meeting is specifically requested by the client.
Q. Who needs a Virtual Assistant?
Small business owners (Sole Traders, Partnerships, SOHOs) and busy individuals utilise the services of a VA as opposed to bringing in a temp. The projects are usually varied and may be sporadic or insufficient to warrant hiring an employee.

Consultants, Trainers, entrepeneurs, people who travel about and are uncontactable for long periods.

Students who may want their thesis proofread, people who may want to publish their memoirs (short stories, etc), a club website, or produce club flyers.

Medium to large companies may need the services of a VA for occasional projects that require immediate and experienced attention, or when they do not have the training time or equipment available to bring in a temp.
Q. Why should I use a Virtual Assistant and not a Temp?
With a Virtual Assistant you pay only for the time and services you require without having to worry about tax, or pension and NI contributions, holiday and sick pay, etc.

As well as cutting out the cost of an agency, you don't have to provide extra space, hardware, software, or insurance cover as you would for permanent or temporary staff.
Q. Is this the same as 'outsourcing'?
Yes. To 'outsource' is to seek resources outside of one's own organisation, usually to save money and/or benefit from the skills of another entity. Typically, outsourcing is an arrangement in which one company provides services for another company that could also be or usually have been provided in-house. Outsourcing can range from the large contract in which a company like IBM manages IT services for a company like Xerox to the practice of hiring contractors and freelance workers on an individual basis.
